A quickish colouring test for Blindsprings based pretty much on what I did for the last comic but it feels SO SLOW. Going to be doing a bunch of these tests to sort of see what looks good and is fast and then figure out how I’m rendering bgs.
And yet more concept art! A more finalized design for the Academic magic University (which I may call Wyrding University as a callback to the original storyline that I created for Tammy like five years ago which was actually called Wyrding U and I posted like 3 pages online before I realized that I had started without putting enough effort in to making the storyline great, and I had sort of wrote myself in to a corner after 5 pages, oops) That was 3 years ago! I’ve had three years to fix the storylines and make sure that I knew enough about Tammy so that she’s a character in her own right, rather than just dragged along by plot elements like she was in the past.
THAT BEING SAID, Tammy is wearing the girls uniform and Imogen is wearing the boys uniform because girls 100% of the time and also because she’s heavily invested in Orphic rights and anything she can do to stress out the Academics, she is down for.
(not to mention she likes being able to run around and kick people if need be)
Also Tammy is wearing a tiny engravers toolkit for reasons.
Decided to do a quick sketch before I went to sleep tonight of two characters that constantly give me issues— and I like how both of them ended up looking!
How strange that smaller eyes=everyone looks their age instead of 12 hahaha.
Left is Rajani, the more radical leader (compared to Alicia) of a rebel group from a different district in Kirkhall, and on the right is Harris, who is a young Academic rising through the ranks who generally has interesting ideas that are shot down by the older and more experienced academics.
This was meant to be a quick before bed sketch that I ended up really liking and decided to quickly colour it up to test what no lines would look like and I LOVE IT SO MUCH but I need to keep working with it to make it more time manageable.
ANYWAY I SUPER LOVE THIS and turned it in to a huge desktop.

Giant bush hair? Check.
Both bell shaped dresses and more swingy skirts look good on this design, and better yet, she reads as a preteen— I’ve been drawing Tammy as if she’s a teen/adult for awhile now and it’s ANNOYING so now i feel like she’s the right age. Also hilariously adoraboo yes.
I brought back her squarish face, removed the cheek bangs because it made her look too classy, removed the neck line since that’s how I originally designed her forever and a day ago, and then gave her the original bangs— I took them out before because I found it too difficult to draw her from the opposite angle but I THINK I CAN HANDLE IT NOW.
So yeah I am really digging this tammy version since it feels like Tammy. Want to get a model sheet done, expression sheet etc before I move on to the other characters, hahaha.
She gets the most time in the story so she gets to be designed the most.

Decided to try, yet again, to do a layout plan of Tammy’s room.
It’s one of those things I’m constantly trying to figure out because my dad actually designs houses so I always sort of feel foolish when I struggle with it as much as I do.
But I like this! The window is pretty much the window of the st paul’s artist studios in london, which are gorgeous, but the building tammy is in is based on one up the corner from me, because my story is set in a fictional version of Canada.

Does anyone have a good tumblr of interesting photos to use for speedpaints? I’m looking for cool lighting, tonal contrast and good comp when I’m looking for speedpaint references, and it’s taking me a long time to find things I like which is sort of really against the whole speedpaint idea— i’m sort of looking for something like omgthatdress (and use it as a resource like drawthisdress does)
Time taken was 2 hours and ten minutes, still colour picking because im still not that great at colour replicating things that are complicated.
why did i choose to speedpaint something so COMPLETELY DIFFICULT.
/totally colour picked WOW HARD EVEN DOING THAT. I’m trying to learn how colours blend together and being more open to like MUDDYING COLOURS TOGETHER, so I am pretty happy with how this turned out.
Speedpaint of like almost 3 hours LOL NOT REALLY A SPEEDPAINT FOR MOST. Bgs take me about a million years aka i never do them nor finish them, so 3 hours>infinity.

A bunch of expressions I drew of Tammy when I was failing to be productive a few weeks ago. Mostly done because I have to draw a lot of expressions at work, so at least it was relevant dicking around haha.
I think the colouring is still too complicated for a comic page. WELP BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARD. The lineart, on the other hand, is pretty quick and dirty, so I’m confident that part is aok!
OR MAYBE NOT idk. Amelia is definitely complicated as all get out.
I wanted to get this done for Halloween but didn’t manage it!!! Had some fun working out the styling for the Academic’s attire.
I DREW THIS WITH A REF which was in colour, so I used this as like a HOW DO I ILLUSTRATE??? and also can I do something in tones and make it look right and the answer is I THINK SO??????????
WHO KNOWS. References are awesome.
